It is likely to move Westward causing heavy showers and strong winds over most parts of the country and surrounding sea areas and is expected to intensify further in to a marginal cyclone and move over the northern part of Sri Lanka tonight. The Department of Meteorology has issued a bad weather advisory saying a marginal cyclone ( not severe ) is expected over the northern parts of Sri Lanka tonight.The department said that the existing depression has intensified into a deep depression and was located about 200 km East of Mullaitivu at 0830 hours today (29). Shallow and deep sea areas off the coast extending from Jaffna to Batticaloa via Trincomalee will experience very rough conditions, strong winds and intermittent rain. Therefore fishing and naval community have been advised to refrain from maritime activities in those areas.Most parts of the island will experience rainy conditions. Strong winds and very heavy rain fall (more than 150 mm) will also occur in the Eastern, Northern, North- central and North -western provinces. Scattered heavy rain falls (more than 100 mm) is also expected elsewhere. Low line coastal areas from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai may be slightly inundated by sea waves.The situation is being continuously monitored, and the public is advised to be vigilant to the weather information released by the Department of Meteorology.
