Proponents of a name change for West Van Nuys say the city has scheduled a public hearing for Monday — and invited only opponents. The West Van Nuys/Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council had gathered more than 600 signatures backing its bid to expand Lake Balboa to include West Van Nuys. But Neighborhood Council members said Friday that only the 600 opponents of the plan were notified by the city clerk about a public hearing scheduled by the City Council’s Education and Neighborhoods Committee. The committee will decide whether to recommend a name change for a vote by the City Council. “Something smells rotten in Denmark,” said Steve Leffert, chairman of the WVN/LB ad hoc renaming committee, who was originally informed the meeting was set for Tuesday morning downtown. “This last-minute thing — zing. They’re only notifying those people that are against it. This is biased.” A representative of the City Clerk’s Office was unavailable late Friday. The public hearing will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at Van Nuys City Hall, 14410 Sylvan St. — Dana Bartholomew, (818) [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
